LOUGHMACRORY 0 – 11 0 – 10 ROCK
Seniors hold on for narrow win in promotion play off
Leading by six points mid way through the second half the seniors made heavy weather of this victory and could only muster a single point in the final quarter just holding on for a narrow one point win in this promotion play off semi final in Pairc an Locha on Saturday evening.
Enda Ward had notched two of his seven pointed frees before the visiting Rock opened their account with a pointed free in the ninth minute. Stephen Donaghy took a long delivery in from Gussy McAleer and split the posts to restore the two points advantage and the ever dependable Enda Ward successfully converted three more frees in reply to a further pointed free from the Rock to open up a four points advantage at the half way stage at 0 – 06 to 0 – 02.
On the resumption of hostilities Ward swapped pointed frees with the Rock centre forward and the men from the East closed the gap to three before Stephen Donaghy, substitute Karl Logue and Enda Ward again extended the home advantage to six . It was a cushion they needed as the Rock hit a purple patch and the Lough boys found themselves on the back foot for the final twenty minutes of the encounter. Rock surged forward time and time again sending over six points in reply to just a single but eventually match winning effort from Ryan O’Brien in one of the home side’s rare forays forward.
Division one football in 2011 is still a hope and in the meantime we await our opponents from the other semi final featuring Moortown and Pomeroy.
