GORTIN 0 - 15 1 - 14 LOUGHMACRORY
Seniors leapfrog Gortin on League Table
On Sunday the seniors earned 2 league points in Gortin reversing the result from the first leg encounter to leapfrog their opponents on the table. In a high scoring open game of football the result was in doubt right to the final whistle.
Loughmacrory opened brightly, Ronan Ward converting two frees in the opening minutes and his brother Enda then sent over following an excellent piece of fielding from Sean Paul Slane. Stephen Conway made it four nil expertly curling over a left footed shot from near the end line before Gortin opened their account and went on to score nine points in reply to a solitary strike from half back John Gallagher. After a barren fourteen minutes Ronan Ward eventually lifted the siege with a converted free and his brother Enda added another but still the visitors trailed by three at the short whistle.
Right from the second half throw in Ronan Ward set about closing the deficit sending over two fine strikes in the opening two minutes, one from each boot. Gortin had restored their three points lead before Gerard Donaghy took a pass from Ronan Ward to split the posts, and, after good work by Ciarán Ward, Damien McAleer fed Ciarán Meenagh who fisted over to close the gap to one once again. Gortin’s Kevin McCullagh sent over his fifth free of the day before Enda Ward struck for what proved to be the match winning goal palming to the net after his initial shot had come back off an upright. Ronan Ward and Kevin McCullagh exchanged two pointed frees each before Sean Paul Slane sent over leaving two points in it with a minute to play. The Glensmen surged forward once again in a last ditch effort to salvage something from the encounter but Loughmacrory defence stood firm holding out for a two points victory.
