LOUGHMACRORY 0 - 07 0 - 12 DERRYLAUGHAN
Minors fall at first hurdle
A large crowd came to Páirc an Locha on Wednesday evening to watch the minors, clad in their new strip, open their championship campaign against visitors Derrylaughan.
The exchanges were fairly even in the opening stages as first Derrylaughan opened the scoring with a point from play after 2 minutes and Joseph McCracken replied with a pointed free for Loughmacrory two minutes later
The home side then exerted pressure on the visitors’ goal for a five minute spell but their defence held firm before the Barry’s then enjoyed a purple patch knocking over five points without reply to take a 0 - 07 to 0 - 01 lead after twenty minutes. McCracken converted another Loughmacrory free to register his and Loughmacrory’s second point but the visitors finished the half strongly to go in at the break enjoying a comfortable six points lead at 0 - 08 to 0 - 02.
The Loughmacrory lads came out a transformed team after the break as they really took the game by the scruff of the neck knocking over five points without reply one from McCracken, one from Pius McElhatton and three from Paul Donnelly who had moved out to the three quarter line to good effect, to reduce the margin to just one. They continued to push forward but that equalising point proved elusive. The visitors withstood the pressure and, having gone twenty five minutes without scoring, they come back strongly in the last ten minutes of the match. Just as the home side had done in the third quarter the Barry’s went on the register five points without reply to progress to the next round.
