Reserves bow out of the championship

Although Loughmacrory was fielding a new look reserve team,  including a few under sixteens due to the absence of a number of regulars, this was a close affair from start to finish. Shane McCullagh leveled matters at two apiece after ten minutes and put a point between the sides a minute later. Young Daniel Fox, playing his first game for the reserves, then sent the ball to the opposition net for the only goal of the game to put his side four up at the end of the first quarter. Ciarán Ward knocked over a point in reply to a similar score at the other end but the home side finished the half strongly recording four unanswered points to draw level at the break.

It was point for point in the early exchanges of the second period as first Shane McCullagh and then Ciarán Ward levelled matters when Edendork had nosed ahead on two occasions in the first ten minutes. Ciarán Ward then received a bad nose injury but unfortunately was forced to stay on the field as Loughmacrory had no subs on the bench.

Some of the Lough men were beginning to show signs of tiredness by now and three points in as many minutes seemed to signal that Edendork were going to canter to the finishing line. The St Teresa’s came back strongly in the last quarter however with two points from Shane McCullagh and a fisted effort from Eoin Mullan to leave the teams level for the fifth time at the end of the sixty minutes.

Extra time was played as a winner had to be decided on the evening and so the teams took the field for two ten minute periods. By this stage some of the Loughmacrory men had run out of steam and they failed to raise a flag in extra time while the St Malachy’s added a further three points to their total to progress to the next round of the championship.
